Sauherad is a municipality in the county of Telemark,
Norway.
Sauherad (until 1918 named
Saude) was established as a municipality January 1, 1838 (see
formannskapsdistrikt).
The name
The municipality (originally the parish) is named after the old farm Sauar (
Norse Sauðar), since the first church was built here. The name is the plural form of
sauðr m 'spring, issue of water'. The meaning of the combination
Sauherad (Norse
Sauðaherað) is 'the district (
herað) of Sauðar'. (See also the names
Krødsherad and
Kvinnherad.)
Until 1918 the name was written "Saude".

The coat-of-arms is from modern times (1989). It shows an
apple tree.
